Osteoarthritis
Our Osteoarthritis clinics are lead by our experienced RVN Sarah. The clinics were set up to help all of our canine and feline friends who are troubled by osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis is a painful and debilitaing condition that can affect one or many joints. It is predominantly seen in middle aged and elderly dogs and cats but young dogs can be troubled by it too.
Recognising the pain caused by arthritis is key to managing your pets condition. Whilst many pets limp when troubled by a painful joint, many do not and will show other subtle signs. If the pain is left untreated "wind up" may be experienced - a condition where the signs of pain become heightened and the slightest thing then becomes too much.
It isn't easy living with a pet severely affected by disease (this includes heart disease and diabetes too) and it required support and commitment and a multimodal approach. Here is where our nurses can step in and help you.
At the osteoarthritis clinic you will be asked to fill in a short questionnaire. Sarah will then go through the many aspects of arthritis care with you and make some recommendations to help you and your pet. In particular they will discuss;
- Exercise management
- Weight management - this is key! If your pet is overweight this will have a significant bearing on his or her arthritis. Did you know that just a 10% reduction in weight can reduce the pain by 50%
- Home environment - getting the home environment right will help your pets no end
- Weather considerations
- The use of joint supplements and diet
- The use of laser, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and Stem Cell Therapy
- Hot and Cold therapies
- Rehabilitation, hydrotherapy and massage
