Lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasitic worm that affects dogs and foxes. Once infected, the adult lungworms live in the animal’s heart and the major blood vessels which supply the lungs.  Slugs and snails are the main source of lungworm, so dogs known to eat them are at obvious risk, but the slime trail can also be infectious. Therefore dogs who eat grass, or pick up toys that have been left outside and been in contact with slugs and snails are also at risk, as are those who drink from standing water. 

Sadly, this means that most of our dogs are at some level of risk. 

 

Lungworm clinical signs can be very vague, and unfortunately it can be fatal if left untreated.

 

Clinical signs can include:

• General sickness
• Coughing
• Weight loss
• Lethargy
• Poor blood clotting
• Vomiting and diarrhoea

 

We would urge everyone to check whether their dogs are protected against lungworm.

 

There are currently three products licensed for the prevention of lungworm. All products require monthly dosing to ensure complete protection.
