This clinic has been set up to help our many canine and feline friends who have been newly diagnosed with osteoarthritis, and those pets whose osteoarthritis has progressed and extra help is needed to manage their condition. 

Osteoarthritis is a common condition affecting 80% of dogs over 8 years of age, and 90% of cats over 12. One in four dogs over the age of 1 also have osteoarthritis - a truly shocking statistic. With this new clinic, our nurses will be able to help owners to manage these pet's conditions, helping them move into their adulthood and senior years as comfortably as possible.

Arthritis is a debilitating and painful condition, but it can be successfully managed. Osteoarthritis is caused by a degeneration of the normal structures within the joint/s, particularly the cartilage. This causes pain which results in reduced use of the affected joint/s. The surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments become weak which results in less joint support, and as a result the body compensates elsewhere. This causes more pain. Unfortunately, the brain becomes more aware of the constant pain and magnifies it. It becomes a vicious cycle.

Managing arthritis isn't just about using medications - the whole picture needs to be looked at, and a tailored care plan put into place for each patient. This can include weight management, nutrition, supplements exercise and rehabilitation, home modifications, mental stimulation, laser therapy, stem cell therapy to name a few.

Our Osteoarthritis clinic appointment lasts for about an hour, and is led by our RVN's Sarah and Emma (at Henley) and Debbie at Twyford. They will examine your pet, ask some simple questions about your pet's lifestyle and home life, and then come up with a detailed plan to help you and your pet. This can involve some simple home changes, recommendations with regards to diet and supplements, a weight management plan if needed (this is key!) and exercise and rehabilitation techniques. At the end of the consult you will be given our mobility matters booklet and our recommendations written down for you.
